In April 2015 I sold my old AWD Vibe to some one from highschool. After work tonight I go to Tim Hortons for tea. I see it, I see my old Vibe parked there. Holy shit, that stupid car is still alive. I see the person I sold it to inside, great. I go in, and they see me, they notice my Juke. Last time they saw me I had my Sonic. How it went down:

Buddy- “Sold the Sonic?”

Me- “Nope, traded it in June. Hows the Vibe treating you?”

Buddy- “Good, just rolled over 218,000kms. I also slept in it, the front passenger seat folding flat is great” (I sold it at 178,000kms)

Me- “Must be doing lots of driving.”

Buddy- ”Being doing roofing, lots of job sites far away. How about you?”

Me- “Been working in a restaurant.”

Buddy- “Thats good. Just had to do the front wheel bearing last month.” (I got them done at 175,000kms)

Me- “Sounds pricey.”

Buddy- “It was.”

Me- “I need to get going, have a good night.”

Buddy- “You too.”

Looking at, you could see lots more highway scars. It looked like a proper beater.

That actually... doesn’t sound bad at all? I mean it’s a Vibe with 218,000 kms.

I’m not shocked the engine is lasting, I’m shocked it’s not fallen apart with all the rust..

Apparently the guy I sold my pickup to in Seattle then sold it to a guy in Marysville who then sold it a guy in Lake Stevens. Last week my sister said, “Oh we see that thing driving around every day.” Kind of gives me a warm feeling.

Pretty sure I was the billionth owner by the time I bought it. It had seen some things. Also had over 300k miles when I sold it... wonder how close it could be to 400k now.

There are over a dozen small towns that are closer than to me than the nearest Tim Hortons. I’m not sure you actually know what a small town is.

But somewhat relevant, apparently the older lady who works at the coffee ship in my town used to own my truck, despite the fact that I bought it in the city over 100 away.

I’m guessing the Vibe doesn’t use Toyota wheel bearings?

My wife claimed to be from a “small” town. Then she said something about the mall being about five miles away from her house....

The nearest mall to my small town was 35 miles away. We didn’t have a stoplight until I was a Junior in high school.

My house was five miles away from town.

There are only 13 communities in Manitoba with more than 4500. 4500 is a friggen city.

I have to drive 45 miles to find a stop light. Or a Mcdonalds. Or a mall of any variety. Elementary school is the next town over, high school is two towns over.

Okay, because I love driving, I drive through towns like this all the time and I have to wonder, what do you do for work?? Does everyone just drive 40 miles to some larger town to work?

My spot is a little bit out of the norm, in my mind. My specific area is a bit of a resort area, cottage country sort of place, right next to a national park, so the population is pretty seasonal. A couple days ago I started working on the maintenance crew at a resort that does stay open in the winter, but before this I’ve had a bunch of jobs in different areas for the park itself. Simply owing to cost of living, there are a lot of people who work for the park who do actually commute 30-50 miles, but the park being government has much higher wages for lower-skill jobs so it does lean itself towards that.

Once you get out of the resort area, most jobs are in agriculture or infrastructure. Every small town will have one or two larger operations that have a bunch of workers, but they’re not always from that town, so lots of people do commute back and forth between towns, but not necessarily to a larger one. Because it is an agricultural area, a large percentage of the population won’t actually live in a town per se, and lots of larger employers are set up outside of towns as well, so driving all over the place is pretty normal.
